WIP Madness Week 4- November Check-In #wipmadness

This week has flown by like the frenzied flight of a turkey escaped from the Butterball plant.

I hope my fellow Americans had great holidays with family and friends, or solo should that be your preferred way to roll. I went to a great "orphan" Thanksgiving with 19 amazing free thinking artist and entrepreneurial types, then had a visit on Black Friday from a high school buddy in town (Asheville, anyway) with her family. I've also written - a ton- am back up to 30k (more by the time this posts) on the WIP and I hope I won't get stalled again. I would love, love, love to finish the first draft by the end of winter break. NANO is also winding down for many of you. I've read numerous success stories on Twitter, but honestly, words on the page equals success. No matter the count. But, how'd you do?

Speaking of December, who's our host? I can't remember. I plan on posting again tomorrow (Tuesday) with the announcement of the 4th week winner of the T-shirt and I can link to our next host then.

And before I announce the winner, here's what I want to know. At the beginning of our month, we named three things our protagonist is thankful for. Now I want you to name three things your antagonist is thankful for. I find this tough for my current WIP because I don't have an obvious antagonist, so I'm going to go with Sammy from Sing To the Wind.

1. He's thankful for his long Kid Rock hair.
2. He's thankful that he doesn't have to pay rent and that his in-laws are dumb enough not to ask for it.
3. He's thankful he's found a way to make some money without having to sucker up to a real job.

Oh yeah, it's time to announce a winner. Not counting Kim from this week's comments, there were 14 yet-to-win commenters to draw from. Random.org chose #8.

Shari!
Even though it was all random.org's doing, this is fitting. Shari asked for hugs from her #wipmadness peeps this week, and look Shari! It's telling you to Nourish Your Muse :0)

(Pop me a DM or an e-mail (up under my profile on this blog) with your color preference and size and mailing addy. The colors are listed under week 2's post.)

And remember, check back tomorrow to see this week's winner (so if you want a chance, post today!). I'm doing it then so I can get the shirts, ordered, silk-screened and off to the winners. And if you're hosting for December, let me know that, too!

And I am so thankful for each of you! This coming March will mark my 2 yr anniversary hanging with #wipmadness and that is awesome.

  1. Ooooh, so happy Shari won the prize this week! Shari, YOU ARE AWESOME.

I had a great turkey day and enjoyed the time home with my little ones, but also snuck in some revision time every day. It was going well following my master plan until yesterday when I figured out that my master plan included more cutting than I thought, and a whole chapter had to go. My beautiful words all over the floor! The manuscript is thanking me for it though.

My antagonist is a tough competitor who comes close to beating my MC a couple of times. Her name is Britt and she wants everything Lilja has, so most of the time she's not so thankful for what she has herself. Still, she's happy about a few things:
--that her scores were good enough to get her assigned to the Kraka skyship
--that her sometimes-boyfriend Eric got a Kraka assignment, too
--that she's convinced she can crush Lilja one way or another

Hope everyone has a great week! Like JRo said, I am thankful for all of you!

    1. I love when I'm brave enough to slash and burn. You go Kip! And Britt sounds like one Type A nasty mama!

  2. I'm hosting in January. Was it Ghost Girl or LS for December. Can't remember.

Congrats on all the words, Jaye! And yay for Shari. ^_^

On Thursday an atomic bomb dropped on my life out of nowhere. Some of you know what happened. I am dealing with the nuclear winter now, but there are still signs of life. It's still possible that things can be fixed, but it's out of my hands for now.

On Friday I got some very encouraging writerly news. I'll share when I can. Sorry for the vagueness, but I know you all understand. Email me if you need to know details.

I'm not sure if I can keep up my revise-a-chapter-a-day goal right now. But I'll still be cheering all of you on, even if I'm not around as much for a few weeks.

    Write on, Wipsters!

    1. Damn that atomic bomb. We'll be your fallout shelter, Angelina.

And we love cheerleaders, which we all become from time to time when the words won't come or life gets in the way of fiction

  3. Congrats Shari!!!

I think I'm finally out of my writing rut - I just kept feeling something was "off" and I couldn't write on until I figured out what it was. So I spent a lot of time staring at my draft the past week. Nothing. Then as I was brushing my teeth one day, I had an a-ha moment.

I also realized I probably won't have my first draft done by the end of December, so I am aiming for the end of February now. I'm just not a fast writer and I'm okay with that :)

  4. Way to go, JRo! And congrats, Shari!

What a month...last week was a little hairy, so the WIP did not get as much attention as she deserved. But I built a kick-ass ladder for the awesome reading nook we built for Ghost Daughter.

My primary protagonist is a lurker, but here is what he is thankful for:

    1. Secrets
    2. beautiful children
    3. the creek

    I have a few protagonists that aren't as clear-cut:

They are thankful that they don't have what the MC has. That nobody knows how scared they really are. That high school is almost over.

I'm thankful for our fabulous WIPmadness crew and for the time I got to share with my family last week.

    Party on, wipsters!

    2. I'm supposed to host in February...I can't remember who's up for December. But I can do it if you need me to :-)

    3. Thanks, we'll wait and see if L.S. shows up.

  5. Your antagonist is truly one to hate -- even if he does sound smart. :-)

    1. Yeah, he's pretty skanky. He was a load of fun to write, especially when I was instructed to make him worse.

  6. I totally know what you mean about the Cybils reading and working on Nanowrimo! That's been me too. And these past few weeks the books have been a coming to my door step. The nominated ones that is! Even the mailman and UPS dudes are commenting on it!

Not sure who's hosting in December. I'm supposed to be doing copy edits on GODDESSES this coming month but haven't heard anything yet. If you can't get anyone, let me know. I might be able to squeeze it in.

  7. Oh yay! That's awesome! Thank you so much (I'll email you). I'm so thankful for the #wipmadness crew. The encouragement and accountability has always been great, but like JRo mentioned, I needed an extra dose of support this past week, and the wipmadnessers were there for me. Thank you all SO much. Don't know what I'd do without you. <3

I really lost my writing mojo, but I'm working on re-filling the creative well and trying to have a little faith (in myself, in the creative process, in my creator). No new words on the WIP to report, but I've been journalling and doing "morning pages", so that's good. All shall be well....

    1. All I can think of is Austin Powers now. "Oh no, I've lost my mojo." Journaling and morning pages are such good tools.

    2. I've never seen Austin Powers, but I just watched a clip on youtube so at least I know what you're talking about, lol!

  8. Your antagonist sounds awesome! What a great exercise just to get to know your antagonist better. Hope you had a great thanksgiving. I named you on a meme on my blog if you're up for participating in a little WIP sharing.

  9. Yaaayyyyy for Shari!!! She'll be an awesome model for your shirt design. (We're going to want a photo, aren't we? That should have been a requirement from all your winners.)

Thankfulness is a fitting theme this week. I think at some time or another we've all experienced the cyclic nature of creativity... the fickle Muse, etc. That's when we realize how blessed we are by our supportive #wipmadness buddies.

The antagonist in my previous story would probably say he's thankful for his dogs, for a knowledgeable medical team, and... hmmm. Let's see... maybe the porcelain figures that are a part of one of his Christmas gifts. There. That's as descriptive as I'm getting or I'll be giving the plot away.

Thanks for hosting us this month, Jaye. I'll check back later to see who's doing December.

    1. I think photos are an excellent idea, Carol!

Oooh, the porcelain figures are very curious. I've always thought tiny dust catchers like that are a wee bit creepy.

  10. Congrats to Shari! And thanks so much for hosting this month, Jaye! You've had some great questions.

My antagonist is thankful for her leadership position, thankful for her strong beliefs, and thankful for cute boys.

I reached my 50k word count goal for NaNo on Saturday. Not quite done this MS yet, so I'm trying to keep my nose to the grindstone until I reach The End.

  11. Know whats crazy?
I FINISHED MY REWRITE!!! I believe in combination with #Wipmadness and Nanowrimo, I completed my rewrite. It is now in the hands of 8 people- I already got 1 person's notes back. YAY!!!!! *dances*

My antagonist is thankful for his gf (the mc), Something Corporate (his fave band) and his leather jacket. Bc ya know...you can't be a bad ass without a leather jacket ;)

Hope all is well Jaye and I look forward to getting my t-shirt next month.!

    1. That's not crazy - that's AWESOME! And wow, 8 readers - I would probably have an introvert's coronary over that much feedback at once - they will find it all!!!! Is this the R&R you mentioned? If so, whoot!

Yeah, leather jackets. I've been watching Buffy Season 1 over the break, and Buffy never would shrug off Angel's jacket once she got it.

Congrats again on a great milestone and look for your shirt in a couple of weeks!

    2. Haha I am a total extrovert so being with people/giving them my ms doesn't bother me. Okay.....who am I kidding? I REALLY hope they all like it! Yes it's for the R&R - she's expecting it back sometime in December so hopefully that is doable!

  12. Ha ha, how fun! I'm sad I missed last week now. ;)

My book kind of pits two protagonists against one another, but I'll say the one with the slightly less screen time is the antagonist for this...

    1. Freedom!
    2. That he's managed to not be eaten thus far...
    3. Though he wouldn't out-right admit it, he's thankful for the other protagonist. :)

Thanksgiving break and a nasty cold put a bigger dent in my writing than I would have liked, but I am working to catch up! Finishing chapter 18 for sure today!

    1. We missed you, too! Glad you're feeling better, cold's can knock you flat.

    2. I think it would be fun to host! I would love to! Just need to know any set rules ;)

    3. The only rule I know of is to post every Monday of the month. Most of us who host try and reply to each person and some of us do prizes, but not all. It's just up to you and your style.

I'll put a link to your blog for tomorrow's post :0). YAY!!

  13. Congrats, Shari!

Well, I finished my NaNo. And even though the story's not finished, it's outlined until the end. But I'm going to come back to it later. I need a break. Besides, I have other stuff to do that requires my attention (like giving a friend beta-feedback on her work, since she was able to give me invaluable feedback, too). And getting back to final (they'd better be) revisions on Sign of the Star to finally send out to the agents that asked for it, and of course to query others if none of those work out. Next month's going to be busy, too. And I am okay with that. :)
